Born in Arlington, Mass., in 1996, Williams found a love for music at an early age. She became heavily involved in Boston’s underground music scene before moving to Iowa in 2014. As a teenager, Williams wrote and recorded her debut EP Early Winter Songs From Middle America, self-released the following year. She took the name Squirrel Flower in honor of a nickname she had received in childhood. 

After quickly amassing a regional following through a series of self-managed tours, Williams signed to the It Takes Time label in 2016, through which she released her sophomore EP Contact Sports. The artist rose to national attention, however, in 2020, when she released her debut studio album I Was Born Swimming through Polyvinyl Records. Williams’ soulful singing and clever lyrics earned rave reviews from critics, most notably from Paste magazine and NPR Music. 

Williams has been named an Artist to Watch by premier publications including Rolling Stone, Stereogum and The Guardian.
