This show is based on the internationally celebrated children’s show, SpongeBob SquarePants. Created by the late Stephen Hillenburg in 1999, SpongeBob instantly became a household name. Both the musical and the show take place in Bikini Bottom, a fictional city under the ocean. As a marine biologist, Hillenburg based all of his characters on sea creatures. The live performance and the animated series both feature SpongeBob Squarepants, Patrick Star and Squidward Tentacles. Other popular characters you’ll see in this performance are Sandy Cheeks, Sheldon J. Plankton and Mr. Krabs. Tom Kenny, the original voice of SpongeBob, occasionally acts live in the musical as Patchy the Pirate. Even when he is not there in person, the music sometimes features voice recordings of him reprising his roles as Gary the Snail and the French Narrator.

Other big stars were also involved in the creation of this adaptation. All of the big musical numbers in this play were created by popular musicians. David Bowie helped write the musical number “No Control.” The Plain White T’s wrote “BFF,” and “Hero is My Middle Name” was co-written by Cyndi Lauper. Other artists who contributed to the score include Sara Bareilles, Steven Tyler and Lady A. You can also hear lyrics from John Legend, They Might Be Giants and Panic! At the Disco. The original cast consists of Ethan Slater, Danny Skinner and Gavin Lee. This line-up can also be seen in the Nickelodeon television special, The SpongeBob Musical: Live on Stage!
