The team plays in the West Division of the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League. Home games are played at GFL Memorial Gardens and can seat 4,928.
The history of Sault Ste. Marie hockey goes all the way back to 1919. That team was also called the Greyhounds and played in the Upper-Peninsula League, which has since folded. That team’s first coach, George MacNamara, named the team, saying that “a greyhound is faster than a wolf,” referring to the Sudbury Wolves, a rival team.
The team entered the Senior “A” Division in 1921. The Greyhounds won the league championship in four out of the first five years it was part of the league. In 1924, Soo also won the Allan Cup, which is given to the national senior men’s ice hockey champions of Canada.

In 1972, the team joined the Ontario Hockey Association as a major junior A expansion team. A notable draft pick for them was the then 16-year-old Wayne Gretzky in 1977, as the third pick. Gretzky wanted to wear #9 after his idol, Gordon Howe but ended up with his trademark #99 instead.
