Smoking Popes was formed in 1990, originally named Speedstick. The following year the Caterer brothers recruited Felumlee to complete the lineup, then released their debut EP Inoculator through Radius Records.

Smoking Popes got their big break in 1993 when they were discovered by Ben Weasel of Screeching Weasel, who enlisted the help of producer Mass Giorgini to record the band’s first full-length album Get Fired. In 1994 the band released their sophomore effort Born to Quit, which significantly increased their exposure after its use on the soundtrack to the cult hit film Clueless.

In the years that followed, Smoking Popes performed alongside a slew of high-profile artists including Green Day, Tripping Daisy and Morrissey. Despite a brief hiatus beginning in 1998, the band reunited in 2005 to play a show at Chicago’s The Metro, where tickets sold out in only half an hour.
