The play’s protagonist, Andrew Wyke, develops an obsession with intrigue over the course of his career as a mystery writer. His obsession bleeds into real life when he stages a robbery of his wife’s jewelry, the first in a series of deceptions that see him slowly lose touch with reality. Wyke’s character is based on composer Stephen Sondheim, who maintained a lifelong interest in games and mysteries. Anthony Quayle, who played Wyke in the original Broadway production, won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance in 1971.

Sleuth opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre, where its popularity saw it run for over 1,000 performances. In addition to that year’s Tony Award, Sleuth also won awards for its direction, lighting and acting. It won the Mystery Writers of America Award for Best Play.
