As a teenager, he played in his first band, The Magic Rats, with friend and future musician Rod Picott. 

As a young man, Cleaves studied at Tufts University, where he majored in English and philosophy. In his third year, the artist lived in Cork, Ireland, where he gave several performances as a busker. While living in Maine after graduation, Cleaves attracted a devoted regional following through the release of his debut mixtape The Promise. Songs like “Lonesome Highway” and “Sweet Summertime” remain some of his most requested hits. 

In 1992 Cleaves won the Kerrville Folk Festival’s New Folk competition, which garnered significant media buzz. In 2000 he again made waves through his hit song “Broke Down,” which earned critical praise and achieved widespread radio play. Cleaves is now widely known for his sophisticated musicianship and intelligent songwriting.
