They have enjoyed charting success in Canada with several singles, and are widely known for their 1992 hit album Restless. Finlayson and Maize had previously been members of the bands  The Ramblers and Direktive 17 and originally started Skydiggers as a duo under the name West Montrose. As their lineup continued to grow, they settled on the name Skydiggers.

The band was the first group from Canada to sign to Enigma Records in 1989, through which they released their debut album Skydiggers. It was their second album, however, that catapulted the band to fame. Restless contained their song “A Penny More,” which exploded in popularity and remains their biggest hit today.

Skydiggers followed up the success with their 1993 release Just Over This Mountain, which won several awards including Canada’s Juno Award for Most Promising Group. Their signature sound blends genres as diverse as hip hop and hard rock, all supplemented by Finlayson and Maize’s ethereal vocal harmonies.
