Galway studied flute at the Royal College of Music as well as the Guildhall School of Music under Geoffrey Gilbert. He also later studied abroad at the Paris Conservatoire with Gaston Crunelle and while in the city became acquainted with legendary flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal. He eventually left Paris to start his professional playing career at the Sadler’s Wells Opera in England and spent 15 years as an orchestral player with a number of renowned ensembles including the Covent Garden Opera, London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1969 he became the principal flute for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra where he remained until 1975.
