The Sioux City Symphony had its debut performance on February 27, 1916. The first full-time Music Director of the symphony was Leo Kucinski, who earned the position in 1925. Kucinski, who attended Juilliard, had previously performed as a violin soloist with the Symphony in 1923. Kucinski would be the Music Director until 1977.
In 1977, professional conductor Thomas Lewis took the helm. Lewis was recognized nationally for his ability to build orchestras. With Lewis holding the baton, the Symphony soon came be nationally known and respected. Highlights of Lewis’ tenure include taking part in a National Public Radio series that showcased metropolitan orchestras as well as being featured on television on the Iowa Public Broadcasting Network’s 1980-1981 Family Concert Series.
