He played in his father’s Dixieland band for four years until at the age of 16 when he was invited to join the band in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. From that point on, Phillips’ career just blossomed. He has played the drums for bands in the genres of pop, rock, progressive rock, hard rock, fusion and jazz.
Simon Phillips has been a studio and touring drummer for a who’s who of artists and bands that usually only a musician can dream about. These acts include Mick Jagger, The Who, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce, Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears, Judas Priest, Pete Townshend and many more. In 1992, Phillips made the move to Los Angeles, California, when he was asked to join the band Toto, which he played drums for on and off until 2013.
During the Toto years, Phillips also formed his own band, playing his own music, and with that released his debut full-length album Protocol in 1988, followed by Force Majeure in 1992 and then Symbiosis released in 1995.
