Kevin Russell, vocalist, guitarist and ukulele player, was the leader of an Austin, Texas band called The Gourds, before starting another group in 2007 with Gourds drummer Keith Langford which ended up being called Shinyribs. The group grew to become a nine to ten-piece band, playing country-soul and swamp-funk. The band name's originated from an encounter Rusell had with a homeless woman after he bought her an order of ribs, to which she responded with a shout of "Shinyribs."

The band plays their original songs, but they also put their style on covers of other artists that run the gamut from "Buy U a Drank" by T-Pain, "All About That Bass" by Meghan Trainor, to David Bowie's "Golden Years." Shinyribs has recorded multiple compilation albums and full-length studio LPs, including their debut studio album titled Well After Awhile released in 2010, I Got Your Medicine in 2017 and Late Night TV Gold in 2021. Shinyribs has toured throughout the United States and has appeared at many music festivals such as Festival at the Switchyard, Suwannee Roots Revival, and Americanafest.
