He was the founding member for Yura Yura Teikoku - an underground psychedelic rock band that released 21 albums before their breakup in 2010. After his solo career took off with independent releases, he has since released three more albums. Yura Yura Teikoku was a Japanese indie rock band recognized for their uncompromising creativity. The group was formed in 1989 by Sakamoto, Atsushi Yoshida and Chiyo Kamekawa. They disbanded after reaching their peak popularity both domestically and internationally through Sony Music Entertainment. After Yura Yura Teikoku's breakup, Sakamoto began working on solo projects. His first album, released in 2012, took him away from his rock persona and brought comparisons to Todd Rundgren due to its soft grooves, entitled How to Live with a Phantom.

Collaborating with OOIOO's Yuta Suganuma and AyA, Sakamoto was able to showcase his talent as both an instrumentalist and vocalist on Let's Dance Raw that was released in 2014. His music is a blend of psychedelic rock, funk and global influences. He used the steel guitar on this project to give it that "Hawaiian" feel without making it too much and infusing Japanese instruments to incorporate more of an outskirts homage. Like many of his music videos, Sakamoto uses his watercolor paintings in an interesting way to convey animation. He also released a record in 2016 called Love if Possible.
