It eventually resulted in a major deal with EMI and a string of hit singles, including 9 To 5, For Your Eyes Only, Strut and Sugar Walls. The TV connection meant she had little credibility as a serious artist in the UK but she surprised everybody by winning a huge following in the US, scoring a major hit duetting with Kenny Rogers on We've Got Tonight (1982) and teaming up with Prince for the Number 2 hit U Got The Look (1987).

Another big hit followed in 1988 with The Lover In Me and she linked up again with Prince to co-write The Arms Of Orion for the movie Batman. She also moved into acting, appearing in the TV series Miami Vice and was the voice of a dog in the film All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, going on to star on Broadway in the musicals Man Of La Mancha and Grease.
