The ballet was Balanchine’s first full-length production in America and his goal was to expose Americans to ballet at a time when it was not very popular. It was choreographed using his students at the School of American Ballet and gave its first test performances at the famed Felix M. Warburg estate in White Plains, NY. It held its official premiere in 1935 at the Adelphi Theatre in New York City with the American Ballet company and was conducted by Sandor Harmati.
