She began writing songs as a young woman while studying at Elon University in North Carolina, then after graduation moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career in earnest. Baldridge adopted the stage name Semler in honor of her family history and out of a desire to be seen as gender-neutral.

In 2021, the songwriter released her debut EP Preacher’s Kid, which quickly rose to the top of the iTunes Christian Music chart. Baldridge’s overnight celebrity led to appearances on NPR and support from Christian music celebrities such as Trey Pearson, Josh Lovelace and Kevin Max. Later that year she released her sophomore EP Late Bloomer, which once again reached the top of the iTunes charts.
