He started playing drums before moving on to the trumpet in fifth grade and he soon developed an interest in jazz music after being gifted a couple of Miles Davis records.

Jones knew he wanted to pursue a career in music by the time he was in high school and began studying classical and jazz trumpet. He earned a bachelor’s degree in classical trumpet performance at Youngstown State University and a master’s at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He landed a six-month gig with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in 2004, led by Wynston Marsalis who offered him third chair with the ensemble at the end of his run and he moved up to lead chair within a few months. Jones has also dedicated his time to educating newcomers, teaching and working at schools like Duquesne University, Oberlin Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.
