The rodeo is typically held over two days in early April with National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association approved competition in bareback riding, barrel racing, breakaway roping, bull riding, goat tying, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping and tie down roping. 

South Dakota State University started its rodeo program in 1952 and the Jackrabbits compete as a collegiate club in the Great Plains Region. The school usually rosters more than 40 members that compete in rodeos around South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska. They travel more than 5,500 miles for competition throughout the season. The program has led students to multiple NRF and CNFR qualifications as well as regional championships.
