McManus left home as a teenager and moved in with his older sister in Chicago, desperate to escape his surroundings and convinced he'd go to jail like his brother if he stayed. It was a difficult and lengthy road to recovery. It wasn't until McManus went on a trekking excursion in the Himalayas that everything came together.
