Born Alexander “Sasha” Hedges Steinberg, Velour is from Brooklyn, New York. They began their career in drag in 2013 while studying at The Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont. The following year, they took their act back to their native NYC, founding The Drag Magazine. They participated in balls and drag shows all around the city before creating their own. Nightgowns is a monthly drag show that began in 2015 at Bizarre Bushwick and National Sawdust in Brooklyn.

Velour truly broke into mainstream success by appearing in Ru Paul’s Drag Race season nine. They ultimately won their season. Velour’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional” in the season finale won the Performance of the Year title from The A.V. Club and “TV’s Best Musical Moments by Entertainment Weekly.
