Hailing from upstate New York, Samara Joy admits music has been a part of her life since an early age. She was inspired by her paternal grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon who fronted the popular Philadelphia-based band, The Savettes. Guzzling gospel and intermixing faith on folk, the group gave Joy a newfound appreciation for the arts. Joy’s father toured with legendary gospel giant, Andrae Crouch but Joy admits that her introduction to music goes far deeper than attending her father’s concerts as a young child. 

Samara Joy is inspired by the likes of gospel and R&B artists, among them greats like Stevie Wonder, Lalah Hathaway, George Duke and Musiq Soulchild. She is also heavily influenced by Kim Burrell, Commissioned and a wealth of other artists. Indeed Joy’s musical tastes are as diverse as her live performances. She creates music that is as enjoyable for the tweens and twenty-somethings as it is for the seventy and eighty-somethings who attend her live shows.
