He occasionally performed with them on stage as a child, as he had already learned to play the fiddle by three years old. As an early teenager, Amidon played in the band Popcorn Behavior with future pianist Thomas Bartlett.
The group’s musical talents saw them tour the US before having graduated high school, even appearing on National Public Radio. Amidon moved to New York City to pursue music as an adult, briefly playing in a handful of indie rock bands.
Amidon achieved mainstream success with his third solo album I See the Sign, released in 2010. The album, which featured collaborations with virtuosos Valgeir Sigurðsson and Shahzad Ismaily, met with widespread critical acclaim. I See the Sign reached the top 10 lists in many magazines, most notably in Pitchfork and the New York Times.
