The program began in 1993 when the school moved its clubs up to the varsity level and competed in Division III.

The Pioneers started in the ECAC South, and when coach Shaun Hannah was hired in 1996 began enjoying their first successful seasons. Hannah’s inaugural year as coach saw the time post its first winning record, and rank second overall in the South Division. The team was then promoted to Division I play as part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the late 1990s. The Pioneers’ second season in the MAAC doubled their win total, with the team winning its first Division I playoff game two years later.

In the early 2000s, the Pioneers reached the championship game twice as part of the newly-formed Atlantic Hockey Association. Coach C.J. Marottolo received the conference’s Coach of the Year Award for the accomplishment.
