His time spent attending the Free Church of God in Christ of Atlanta, Ga., was crucial in his development as a singer. By the age of five, he was already singing harmonies in the church choir. He attended Georgia State University where he frequently starred in gospel musicals. Shaw dropped out in 1998 to appear in Tyler Perry’s play, I Know I’ve Been Changed.
Shaw joined the Motown cover band the Fabulous Soul Shakers in 2004. His time with the Fabulous Soul Shakers caught the attention of Columbia Records. They released his first album This is Ryan Shaw in 2007. In addition to his own songs, the album included covers of Wilson Pickett, Bobby Womack and Jackie Wilson originals. The track “I Am Your Man” was nominated for the 2008 Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance Grammy Award.
