He fell in love with singing watching his uncles perform in the band Juan Manuel Perez y Los Serenaders. Ruben began his career in the 1950s as a singer for the Alfonso Ramos Orchestra, where his experience singing cha chas, cumbias and rancheras would greatly influence his later sound.

In 1969 Ramos founded the band The Mexican Revolution, playing the Chicano circuit between Dallas and the Rio Grande Valley. By 1987 the singer had won his first Tejano Music Award for his runaway hit single “El Gato Negro,” which would become his nickname to fans for the rest of his career. The members of The Mexican Revolution are Duane Hargis, William Perkins, Fabian Hernandez, Don Wise, Christopher Rivera, Joe Ramos, Bobby Dominguez and Rick Fuentes.

The band’s 35th anniversary album earned a nod for the Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album, an award they would win in 2009 by way of their album Viva La Revolucion.
