RPI’s hockey program is one of the oldest in the US, tracing its origins as far back as 1901. The Engineers played as a Division I independent for over three decades before joining the Tri-State League as a founding member in 1950. They won three back-to-back season championships in the league beginning in 1952, making their first NCAA Tournament appearance the following year.

In 1954 the Engineers won the NCAA Tournament for the first time, then joined the newly formed ECAC Hockey League in 1960. The team went on to enjoy one of the longest win streaks of any Division I program, going undefeated for 30 games in 1984. It was an accomplishment they would repeat the next season, where their win streak extended to nearly 40 games.
