Rotting Christ originally formed in 1987 as a hardcore punk band, but quickly evolved its style to become one of the early influential black metal bands. They released their debut EP Satanas Tedeum in 1989, but would not rise to international fame until their 1991 release Passage to Arcturo. Passage to Arcturo established Rotting Christ’s lyrical exploration of occultism as well as their genre-bending use of elements from traditional hymnals and industrial music. These themes would come to be the hallmark of Greek black metal in general and made Rotting Christ one of the genre’s pioneering groups.
