Born on Prince Edward Island in 1977, Cousins began pursuing a music career full-time beginning in 2002. She released her debut EP Only So Long later that year, and her first full-length album If You Were for Me in 2006. A runaway success, If You Were for Me earned Cousins a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination.
In 2007 Cousins won the Mountain Stage Newsong Contest, then the following year won Best Folk Recording and Female Recording of the Year at the Nova Scotia Music Awards and the East Coast Music Awards, respectively. In 2009, she released her sophomore effort The Send Off, which featured a slew of high-profile folk artists including David Myles, Melissa McClelland and Tom Wilson, among others. The Send Off earned Cousins the Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer of the Year in 2010.
