Born in Robbinsville, North Carolina in 1943, Milsap was almost completely blind from birth due to a congenital disorder. After being abandoned by his mother as an infant, Milsap grew up in the Smoky Mountains in the care of his grandparents until he attended the Governor Morehead School For the Blind at age five. During his childhood, Milsap was frequently glued to the radio and displayed a talent for music early on, especially the piano. He was inspired by many of the pioneers of rock n’ roll including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard.
Even while Milsap attended Young Harris College in Young Harris, GA, Ronnie Milsap tickets began to be available, as he would perform locally with the band the Dimensions. That performance experience would only deepen Milsap’s commitment to music and encourage him to pursue it full-time.
Flash-forward to 1973 and Milsap was a resident of Nashville, TN, and a recent signee of RCA records. Milsap’s first single “I Hate You” reached number ten on the country charts. That same year, Milsap went on tour with Charlie Pride, who was a mentor to Milsap in his early years.
Over the years, Milsap has released over 25 studio albums, enjoyed a remarkable string of number one country singles, and won six Grammy awards. He’s also won eight CMA awards and earned a spot in the Country Music Hall of Fame. With a music career that has spanned over fifty years, to see Ronnie Milsap is to see music royalty in living color.
