At 21, Sexsmith began making his own recordings, and soon, he released a cassette called Out of the Duff with singer-songwriter Claudio. A year later, he would release another cassette titled There’s a Way which Kurt Swinghammer would produce. He would go on to independently release Grand Opera Land and release 15 other albums, the latest in 2020 titled Hermitage.

With Sexsmith’s astounding discography, he has been nominated for several awards over his music career. In 1998 he won the Juno Award for Roots and Traditional album of the year, then in 2002, he won the Genie Award for Best Achievement in Music. 2005 marked his win from the Juno Awards again with Songwriter of the Year, and in 2014 he obtained the Juno Award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year.
