He won the light flyweight gold medal at the 2004 Central American Championships before turning professional in 2005, fighting at light flyweight. He fought several times in Nicaragua before fighting Hiroshi Matsumoto in Japan for his international debut.

Gonzalez would then move up weight again and beat Carlos Cuadros via unanimous decision to become WBC Super Flyweight Champion.
