Born in Tucson in 1968, Clyne worked as a ranch hand on his grandparents’ ranch, an experience on which he draws heavily in his lyrics. As a young man, he made frequent trips to Mexico, where he became immersed in the indigenous music of the area.

Clyne went on to attend Arizona State University, continuing to spend much time in Mexico as part of his studies in anthropology. While in college he performed as part of several bands, developing the hybrid folk-rock/classic rock stylings for which he would later become famous.

With both The Refreshments and Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, the artist produced several charting hits including what would become the theme song for the cult animated series King of the Hill. In 2000 he played a concert in Sonora, Mexico which was so popular it grew into what is now a four-day music festival, Circus Mexicus.
