Born in Dallas in 1977, Votolato turned to music-making as a teenager in order to cope with feelings of alienation at his school. He learned to play guitar after seeing the punk rock bands Fugazi and Jawbreaker perform in concert and founded the punk rock band Lying on Loot while still in high school. Lying on Loot disbanded in 1996, however, after which Votolato formed the new band Waxwing. With Waxwing, he developed a devoted cult following in and around the city.
In the early 2000s, Votolato set out on a solo career, turning towards folk rock and alternative country music. He began collaborating with a string of high-profile acts including The New Amsterdams, Damien Jurado and Death Cab for Cutie. His songs have been used in film and television, most notably on The OC and in Cthulhu.
