The Rochester Knighthawks are a professional box lacrosse team that started in 1995. They play in the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial in Rochester, New York, competing in the North Division of the National Lacrosse League. Also known as the K-Hawks, they set a league record by making it to the playoffs each year for the first thirteen seasons, from 1995-2007. They also won three consecutive championships from 2012-2014, becoming the first National Lacrosse League team to do so.
In 2018, the team was moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, but the intellectual property was sold so that an expanded, franchise version could remain in Rochester. The current Rochester Knighthawks are not a part of that previous team, so all prior championships transferred to Halifax.
Box lacrosse, which originally came from the Native American culture, became popular in Canada in the 1930s. It is played indoors, as opposed to the well-known, outdoor field lacrosse. Due to the restricted playing area, the games are much more physical and contact-based and have modified rules to accommodate the intense action.
