He was born on July 12, 1965, to parents who were both musicians so it's not surprising that they encouraged him in this pursuit early on. In 1988 Wilson joined the Gin Blossoms replacing Richard Taylor and became lead vocalist soon after. Wilson remained a member until it disbanded seven years later. Prior to the band's split, they recorded three full-length albums which were Dusted (1989) and New Miserable Experience (1992), which went quadruple platinum with their iconic single "Hey Jealousy." Their last album was produced in 1996 named Congratulations I'm Sorry, securing platinum status once again, along with the hit song "Follow You Down."

Wilson is a successful recording artist and songwriter in his own right, having opened Uranus Recording Studio over two decades ago. Since the death of Pat DiNizio as lead singer for The Smithereens, Wilson has served on occasional tours with them while maintaining an active solo career.
