Born in 1944 in Montreal, Quebec, Charlebois showed a gift for performance at a young age. As a man, he developed his signature style of psychedelic folk-rock that makes heavy use of wordplay and lyrics in working class joual. In 1968 he appeared in one of his earliest acting roles in the film Straight to the Heart.
In 1970 Charlebois won the Sopot International Song Festival and performed in the celebrated Festival Express Tour across Canada. He performed alongside famed Italian pop singer Patty Pravo. In the years that followed Charlebois rose to fame through his hits “Lindberg,” “Ordinaire” and “Les Ailes d’un Ange.” In 1975 he starred opposite Terence Hill in the hit western film A Genius, Two Partners and A Dupe.
In the 90s Charlebois was named an Officer of the Order of Canada and received a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. His songs have seen extensive use in film, most notably in Two Women in Gold, Gabrielle and Between Salt and Sweet Water.
