Riot is a heavy metal band from New York City made up of members Frank Gilchriest, Nick Lee, Todd Michael Hall, Mike Flyntz and Don Van Stavern. The band came together in 1975, attracting attention from a series of major labels with their demos. They signed to Fire Sign Records, through which they released their debut album Rock City in 1977.
Riot soon began performing alongside high-profile acts like AC/DC and Molly Hatchet and enjoyed a surge in popularity following the boom of new wave heavy metal in the UK.
In 1981 Riot released their best-selling album to date, Fire Down Under. Despite its hard-hitting, aggressive sound, Fire Down Under reached the top of the Billboard 200 and catapulted the band to fame overnight. Through the late 80s and early 90s Riot took a turn toward more experimental power metal, most notably on their 1990 release The Privilege of Power. The band began to develop a dedicated cult following in Japan in particular, where they gave a widely celebrated tour in support of The Privilege of Power.
