Born in Van Nuys in 1962, Rachtman developed an interest in heavy metal music as a teenager. He performed as the lead singer of the bands Virgin, Battery Club and The Fairlanes before becoming a VJ for Headbangers Ball in 1990.
Headbangers Ball amassed a cult following in hard rock and heavy metal circles due to its airing darker and sometimes controversial music videos by obscure heavy metal artists. Rachtman’s enthusiasm for the genre made him a well-known figure in the scene, and he leveraged his success to find further work on television and radio in the years that followed. Rachtman has also hosted Loveline, Nitro and Riki Rachtman Radio.
