Born in 1964 in Philadelphia, Harris found a love for dance after seeing The Campbell Lockers perform on Soul Train. He won a number of talent shows as a boy with the dance group he started, Cobra III.

As a young man, Harris founded a number of successful dance groups, most notably The Step Masters and The Scanner Boys. With these groups, he would go on to open for a number of high-profile acts including Salt-n-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash and Run-DMC. In the 80s Harris worked as a choreographer for the dance shows Dancin’ on Air and Dance Party USA.

In 1992, Harris formed the first hip-hop dance touring company, Rennie Harris Puremovement. His works have also been commissioned by several world-class dance troupes including the Philadelphia Dance Company, Colorado Ballet and Memphis Ballet. Harris has won several awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship, the William Shakespeare Award and the Alvin Ailey Black Theater Award.
