The band was formed in 1973 in London by keyboardist Patrick Moraz, drummer Brian Davison and bassist and lead singer Lee Jackson.
The members of Refugee had previously enjoyed success in the bands Jackson Heights, Every Which Way and The Nice, but founded Refugee with a vision of pushing the boundaries of classic rock. Extensive rehearsals led to a polished sound which earned the band a deal with Charisma Records, through which they released their eponymous debut album in 1974. The album earned rave reviews for its sophisticated musical technicality and unique use of natural imagery. Their sound incorporated synthesized elements unusual for the genre at the time, as well as stylings from funk and disco music.
Though Refugee went on a brief hiatus following the departure of its members to join the high-profile bands Gong and Yes, they occasionally regroup to perform their hits to a devoted following still today.
