The Rapid City Marshals were founded in 2021 by Tel Koan and Keith Russ, the owners of the Billings Outlaws and Wyoming Mustangs CIF teams. The name “Marshals” was chosen as an homage to the city’s history in the Old West, and as a way to differentiate the team from the Billings Outlaws and the Sioux City Bandits. The Marshals are the third team to play arena football in Rapid City following the Black Hills Red Dogs and the Rapid City Flying Aces. The team is led by general manager Nick Tomlinson.
