Hailing from Oakland, Charles Ray Wiggins got his start as a bassist in Sheila E.’s backing band on Prince’s “Parade Tour.” He toured for two years and then joined the rhythm and blues trio Tony! Toni! Toné! Before the influential group split in 1997, Raphael Saadiq had begun releasing music as a solo artist, including “Ask of You,” which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100. He began collaborating with other artists, writing and producing several hit songs, including D’Angelo’s Grammy-winning “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” In 2002, he formed his own record label, Pookie Entertainment. That same year, he released his debut album, Instant Vintage, capturing three Grammy nominations.

As a producer, Raphael Saadiq has collaborated with nearly every major artist in the R&B world and beyond, including Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige and Erykah Badu. He earned three more Grammy nominations with 2008’s The Way I See It.
