Formed in 1991 by former members of the seminal punk band Operation Ivy, Rancid helped bring punk music to the mainstream and has influenced countless punk and pop-punk bands over the years. The original lineup consisted of singer and guitarist Tim Armstrong, bassist Matt Freeman, and drummer Brett Reed. Singer and guitarist Lars Frederiksen joined the band shortly after they recorded their first album, simply titled Rancid, and has remained with the group since. The lineup has mostly remained the same, though Reed left the band in 2006 and was replaced with Brandon Steineckert on drums. The band’s legendary sound is largely thanks to the unmistakable vocals of Armstrong and Frederiksen, Freeman’s aggressive and at times furiously fast bass playing, and the gritty subject matter of the songs themselves.
Rancid tickets began to rise in demand as the band began to find footing in mainstream music during the mid-1990s. Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day co-wrote the song “Radio” which was a standout track on the band’s second album Let’s Go. The group also signed a record deal with Epitaph, the quintessential punk music label which was founded by Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. The success of Let’s Go, which peaked at number 97 on the Billboard 200 chart, offered Rancid the opportunity to tour with other punk legends The Offspring.
…And Out Come the Wolves, Rancid’s third album, was their second most commercially successful after 2003’s Indestructible and helped secure the band’s lasting legacy. Rancid performed “Roots Radicals” and “Ruby Soho”, two well-known songs off of Wolves, on Saturday Night Live, and those two songs in addition to “Time Bomb” garnered the band its largest amount of commercial airplay to date. Between 1993 and 2019, Rancid has released nine albums, and shows no signs of slowing down.
