The team was founded in 1975 and played its inaugural season as an independent before joining the ECAC 3 hockey conference in 1976. In 1997, Quinnipiac University’s sports programs including the hockey team transitioned from NCAA Division II to Division I. As a Division I program, the Quinnipiac Hockey team competed in the MAAC and the Atlantic Hockey Association before joining the ECAC Hockey conference in 2005.

Since becoming an NCAA DI program, the Quinnipiac hockey team has earned a reputation as one of the top teams in college hockey. The Bobcats have won over five regular season conference titles along with multiple conference tournament championships. Quinnipiac hockey has also made several appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament including berths in the NCAA Frozen Four portion of the tournament. The university has also produced several players that have gone on to play in the NHL.
