Volleyball became an intercollegiate sport at Purdue in 1975 and the team won its first match on Sept. 27. Carol Dewey served as the team's first head coach and oversaw the program’s transition to become Purdue’s first women’s revenue sport. Dewey accumulated 469 wins and 256 losses during her career with the Boilermakers. Five All-Americans, six Academic All-Americans, and 39 players received the All-Big Ten accolade were produced by Purdue's team under Dewey. She also oversaw three Big Ten champions, in 1980, 1982, and 1985. Dewey guided the Purdue squad to an undefeated regular season in her ninth year as its head coach.
Dave Shondell took the helm in 2003 as the Boilermakers’ fourth coach. During his first year in charge, the attendance record was shattered, with an average of 1,534 spectators per match. The team reached the NCAA Tournament in his second year which started a run of seven appearances in eight years.
