Allen’s parents were musicians and introduced him early to the likes of Pink Floyd, Aretha Franklin, and The Police, and got him drum lessons at eight years old. While at university he was introduced to the music of Bjork, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead. He started producing music himself, on his laptop in his bedroom. Allen’s demo “Only Trying 2 Tell U”, released on SoundCloud in 2014, started racking up listens and by the time “Want Me” was released in 2016 he had a cult following. He released two EPs in consecutive years Swum Baby and Blood Loss followed by a live release On His Own. Allen’s first full album In Praise Of Shadows was released in 2021.
Puma Blue has a distinctly lo-fi, gritty sound, which is unsurprising considering his production process, but Allen leans into this genre. Labeled as “voicemail ballads,” affectionally by fans and critics alike, his intimate, tempestuous lyrical style combines well with this emotive and melancholic voice and jazz-tinged, gritty-but-soulful sounds. The audience can feel all that and more live with Puma Blue tickets. On tour, Allen plays with his band and often collaborates with the likes of Lava La Rue, Biig Piig, and Lucy Lu.
