Born in the city of Madison, Fernow found a love for music as a teenager after encountering the work of the death metal band Deicide. In 1998, he founded the Hospital Productions record label, the same year in which he first began releasing music. In his early years, Fernow’s signature sound involved minimal production and a lo-fi style that used only a microphone, amplifier and occasional percussion. As the years went on he took a turn toward electronica and synthesizers.
The artist has since collaborated with a number of well-known acts including Philip Best, Macronympha and Wolf Eyes. He has occasionally performed as a member of the bands Cold Cave, Ash Pool and Football Rabbit.
