The Friars hockey team resumed play in 1952 as an independent. They joined the ECAC Hockey conference in 1961 and won their first conference title in 1964 under head coach Tom Eccleston. 

The Providence Friars have made over fifteen appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament and have won multiple conference tournaments in both the ECAC and HEA. The Friars have had multiple hockey players selected in the NHL Draft and more than twenty student-athletes named to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.
