German heavy metal band Primal Fear was formed by vocalist Ralf Scheepers and bass player Mat Sinner in 1997. The two musicians had been around the German metal scene for a number of years and Sinner had joined Scheepers' Judas Priest tribute band Just Priest. When frontman Rob Halford left the real Judas Priest in 1997 Scheepers was one of the hopefuls who expected to be engaged by the band as Halford's replacement but unfortunately, the anticipated call from Judas Priest never came.
Undeterred, Scheepers and Sinner decided to create their own band and thus was born Primal Fear. After signing with Nuclear Blast in 1997 the band released their self-titled debut album early in 1998. The album entered the German Charts at number 48 making it one of the highest placed debut albums from a German metal band and subsequent releases from the band have all performed solidly in the rock charts.
The band has undergone various personnel changes over the years but Scheepers and Sinner remain a constant. Primal Fear's lyrical content has attracted much attention over the years from lovers of German metal and many fans claim the band's main themes of science fiction and fantasy are in fact allegorical observations about modern politics and war.
