The Preoccupations were created in 2012 by Munro and Flegel after their previous bands broke up. The two had known each other from earlier tours and recruited Wallace and Christiansen with the intention to push the boundaries of rock music. The group was originally called the Viet Cong, releasing their self-titled debut album in 2015. The members leveraged their fanbase from their previous bands to begin touring widely, most notably appearing at the 2014 South by Southwest Music Festival.
In the wake of public controversy surrounding the historical associations of the name Viet Cong, the group changed their name to the Preoccupations in 2016.
