Possessed by Paul James is the stage name for Konrad Wert, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Florida known for his genre-bending sound which incorporates elements from genres as diverse as bluegrass, punk and R&B. Born in 1976 in Immokalee, Wert was raised in a small Mennonite community. His experiences in the community would later heavily inform his lyrics’ themes of alienation, social activism and working-class woes. Wert released his debut album Possessed by Paul James in 2006. 

Though he labored in obscurity for a number of years, Wert broke through to mainstream success with his 2013 release There Will Be Nights When I’m Lonely. Distributed by Hillgrass Bluebilly Records, There Will Be Nights When I’m Lonely charted at number twelve on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums list. The release was featured heavily on NPR, CMT and MTV, and earned rave reviews from publications like The New York Times for Wert’s sophisticated musicianship. In 2014 Wert was named one of the top artists at Oregon’s Pickathon Music Festival.
